The fourteenth international and interdisciplinary conference of the European Research Network on Global Pentecostalism (GloPent) will be held on 9–10 February 2024 at the University of Heidelberg, Germany
Conveners: Judith Bachmann, Michael Bergunder, Anna Kirchner
Call for Papers
Pentecostalism's attitudes to gender are diverse. Historical research on Pentecostalism has acknowledged its attraction to the marginalized, regardless of gender. Political and social scientists frequently document the significant cultural and social influence exerted by Pentecostal churches on gender debates. Moreover, the theological perspectives on gender within the Pentecostal movement demonstrate substantial heterogeneity.
Additional academic research is required to understand
how Pentecostals navigate gender-related issues in their day-to-day
experiences. This involves placing emphasis on a nuanced understanding of their
self-perceptions and practices.
We invite contributions to our parallel panels, with a particular interest in papers that address the conference theme. Papers may present case studies or comparative analyses of gendered ideals and practices as well as adaptation and subversion strategies within Pentecostal communities. We seek insights on gender expectations: how are they conveyed, received, and implemented? How does gender affect the marginalized or powerful? Where do we find inconsistencies, fissures, or openings in the way gender is realized? Which future possibilities might these inconsistencies imply? We also welcome more conceptual and theoretically oriented papers considering the role of gender for the study of global Pentecostalism.
Keynote speakers are:
- Ezra Chitando, University of Zimbabwe
- Naomi Richman, University of Cambridge
- Brendan Jamal Thornton, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Submission pertaining to other topics will be considered as well, as long as they present ongoing or recently completed research. Proposals for entire panels (3-5 papers) are also welcome, but please contact the conference organisers before preparing your submission.
If you should require on-site childcare, please let us
know as soon as possible so that we may support you.
Submission deadline for abstracts (1300 characters max.): September 30, 2023
