Allan is Professor of Global Pentecostal Studies at the the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies and is director of the Graduate Institute for Theology and Religion at the University of Birmingham, where he has been working since 1995 (formerly Selly Oak Colleges). A former Pentecostal minister and theological educator in Southern Africa, his publications include Zion and Pentecost (2000), African Reformation (2001), An Introduction to Pentecostalism (2004), and he has edited Pentecostals after a Century (with Walter J. Hollenweger, 1999) and Asian and Pentecostal (with Edmond Tang, 2005). He is currently working on a book titled Spreading Fires: The Missionary Nature of Early Pentecostalism, to be published by SCM Press in 2007. He is married to Olwen with two grown children, Matthew and Tami.
