Pentecostal Movement between fragility and empowerment. Observations on the Pentecostal church „Nzambe-Malamu“ with its transnational interconnections (Order information)

- Moritz Fischer -

For decades Christianity has been experiencing a constant increase of its members and a continuous expansion of its sphere of influence globally. Both led to a shift of its gravity centre to the „global South“. Responsible for this development is significantly the international pentecostal-charismatic movement. The importance of Pentecostal churches does not only lie within its numeric and extending growth. If one, apart from that, looks at their qualitative features of identity one notices their extreme ability to multiply themselves through ecclesiological mutations. They do this by splitting up, by founding subsidiary churches and fusions. These three features are connected with their distinctive ability of creating networks and cooperation, which go with other churches, parishes, christian organizations and missionary initiatives.

The available study, in its inductive process, concentrates on one of these independent Pentecostal churches originating in the global South. They are nationally interweaved and organized transnationally. She is called „Nzambe-Malamu“, was founded in Congo, is spread in Central and southern Africa and represented as „migration church“ in America as well as in Europe. The evaluations of these specific observations may allow conclusions of other churches, whose identity constitutes on a comparable clear way through transnational interactions. They make up a whole segment of the Pentecostal Movement, which was withdrawn from observations so far and which we meet „at our doorstep“. By identifying its features, the established churches with their theology are challenged for constructive debates. Furthermore we ask (ourselves) how Nzambe-Malamu manages to re-invent itself again between fragility and empowerment and at the same time we listen to her self-statements. The transdisciplinary perspective which we get in mission-history and ecclesiological regard in connection with intercultural theology converges in the research of the performance of this church in terms of its history of rituals. In general we hope that the classical and the Pentecostal Protestants will succeed in their theological discourse to explore the potential which arises from criticising each other. Originating from there, dealing with transnational Pentecostal churches may encourage us to cooperate in an intercultural and interdenominational theology which assures us how „we live and move and have our being in him“.
