First GloPent Research Project: Transnational Nigerian Pentecostal Churches

The European Research Network on Global Pentecostalism (GloPent) is pleased to announce the first joint research project within the network. It will be funded by NORFACE, a partnership between twelve European national research councils to increase co-operation in research and research policy in Europe. NORFACE receives core funding from the European Commission’s 6th Framework Programme. The theme of the first NORFACE programme is "Re-emergence of Religion as a Social Force in Europe?".

The GloPent project is titled "Transnational Nigerian Pentecostal churches, networks and believers in three Northern countries”. Migrant churches are studied as a potential and potent social force. The researchers will investigate Nigerian migrant Pentecostal networks, churches and believers as a case study of the role of migrant churches in 21st Century Europe. The comparative study will focus on a Nigerian church in Britain, Germany and the Netherlands, and will include fieldwork in Nigeria.

The cooperating partners are Prof. Dr. André Droogers (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam - principal applicant), Prof. Dr. Allan Anderson (University of Birmingham), and Prof. Dr. Michael Bergunder (University of Heidelberg).

Starting from April, 2007, three PhD and post-doctoral researchers will be working on this task for three years. Next to the monographs of the researchers and articles in refereed international journals, three symposia and one international conference are planned in the course of this project.
